How can I start to manage health and safety in my business?
You should start by thinking about how you manage the other areas of your business. Health and safety is no different and should fit in with all the other important management systems in your business, such as finance, production and sales. Don’t over-complicate things – most small businesses will have simple structures for managing their business.
Start by asking yourself the following questions:-
- Do we have a health and safety policy?
- Is it up to date and relevant?
- Do all staff know their health and safety responsibilities?
- Are all staff trained well enough to be able to work safely?
- Do all staff know the risks and the control measures in place to reduce the risks?
- Is there enough written information and advice on health and safety displayed around the workplace?
- Do we carry out any checks, such as workplace inspections, to make sure that we are keeping to the arrangements we set in the policy?
- Are accidents and incidents reported and thoroughly investigated?
